Description:
Los Angeles Civic Grand Opera production of “La Traviata,” Act 3. Opera singer Nelda Scarsella portrays Violetta. She wears a white dressing gown embellished with feathers. She is flanked by Gene Curtsinger (in the role of Alfredo Germont), and an unidentified singer portraying Annina, Violetta’s maid. The setting is Violetta’s bedroom in her Parisian home. Props include a bed, lace covered nightstand, side table, chairs and a settee. Beyond the stage, a musician playing a double- base can be viewed in the orchestra pit at foreground.

A large tree, shrubs, and garden furniture complete the outdoor scenery. Musicians are viewed in the orchestra pit beyond the stage at foreground.

Production of “Pagliacci,” performed by the Los Angeles Civic Grand Opera. Cast members dressed as Italian villagers look on as Pagliacci, portrayed by tenor Julian Oliver in black and white clown costume, sings. He is flanked by two unidentified cast members. The setting is a 19th century Calabrian village. Costumes and scenery flats evoke the time and place: women wearing full skirts peasant blouses; men wearing breaches, short jackets and sashes around their waists. The performers are surrounded by trees, suggesting an outdoor, country landscape. To the right stands a secondary stage resembling a Greek temple with comedy and tragedy masks painted on the pediment. The stage’s interior is obscured by curtains. Beyond the stage, musicians can be viewed from the orchestra pit at foreground. Opera performed at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre, Los Angeles.
