Description:: Bettye K. Cree (Elizabeth Kirkpatrick Cree) was born March 24, 1879. She married Raymond Cree, a founder and developer of Palm Springs, but the marriage ended in divorce. Ms. Cree then maintained an art gallery in Palm Springs. She died in Pasadena on March 16, 1944.

General Petroleum offered the city $500,000 and 35% royalties from recovered oil. The contract was dependent on a voter referendum that would change pre-existing city ordinances, thus allowing for oil drilling in city-owned tidelands. The amendment proposal lost by a 3:1 margin.
