In 1954, a contractual agreement was made between General Petroleum and the Santa Monica City Council in which the oil concern was granted a 10-year lease on Santa Monica tidelands. General Petroleum offered the city $500,000 and 35% royalties from recovered oil. The contract was dependent on a voter referendum that would change pre-existing city ordinances, thus allowing for oil drilling in city-owned tidelands. The amendment proposal lost by a 3:1 margin.

Ornate 1888 horse-shoe-shaped shell art wreath made by poet Ina Donna Coolbrith in upper left corner. In upper right corner is a portrait of Ina Donna Coolbrith which is the frontispiece of her book Songs from the Golden Gate, 1895. The lower portion of the page is an article discussing In Coolbrith making the wreath ["Heirloom Shows Poetess' Art," Los Angeles Times, October 12, 1953]. At the time of this photograph the wreath belonged to the Perrys' nephew John H. Crum of Santa Monica. The shell wreath is an example of Victorian era domestic crafts.

Photograph of an article page (3rd page of 3) with geological illustrations and text describing events leading to the transformation of the Salton Sink (Salton Trough) into the Salton Sea. Text below illustrations at left: “Five centuries ago, Colorado River formed Lake Cahuilla. A few million years later, the Colorado abandoned its mouth at the gulf, took a course to the west, and began filling the Salton Sink. Later the Colorado shifted back to the gulf and the lake dried up. Since then, the sink has been alternately lake and desert. Most recently, from about 900 A.D. to 1400 A.D., it was filled by Lake Cahuilla, whose beach scars are visible around the basin today.”[Text at right:] “In 1905, Colorado broke loose, formed today’s Salton Sea. When first discovered by Spanish explorer Melchior Diaz in 1540, the sink was desert-and so it remained until floods in 1905 sent the Colorado rampaging through the Imperial Canal and into the sink to form today’s Salton Sea. After a dramatic two-year fight, the levees were repaired and the river was turned to its course, Today, Imperial, Parker, and the other dams that hold the river in check maintain a status quo.” Publication unidentified. Farther along the path at right is the depiction of an implied crucifixion (as illustrated by “GOLGOTHA” written above three inferred crosses). The cross at center is being constructed with the help of a rope and pulley – the pulley being a diamond pendant. Beneath the cross is a posted flyer referring to Rev. Mark S. Hogue, 16th District Representative, and Democrat. The bill pronounces: “Hogue, yesterday’s candidate, unwitting pawn, [un-American] factions, unsound advice, untenable promises. Photograph of an article page (2nd page of 3) with geological illustrations and text describing changes to the Colorado Desert area and the Gulf of Mexico, leading to the creation of the Salton Sink (Salton Trough). Text below illustrations at left: “Gulf of California once filled today’s Salton Sink area. We’ve made these charts to serve as a geological guide for visitors to the Salton Sea and the whole Colorado Desert area, We based them on the most widely accepted theory of the area’s evolution: Several hundred million years ago the Gulf of California extended north as far as San Gorgonio Pass. The Colorado River dumped into the gulf about where Yuma is today, gradually building a huge delta westward from its mouth.” [Text at right:] “In later prehistoric age, silt dam cut off gulf from Salton Sink area. As the silt piled up, it finally formed an earth dam which cut the Gulf of California in two and left an orphan salt water lake in the north. With no water to replace that lost by evaporation, the lake dried up-leaving an arid, 1,000-foot-deep basin which has been named the Salton Sink. (From Yuma to its mouth, the Colorado falls about 140 feet; the drop from Yuma to the Salton Sea is nearly 400 feet. Thus the next series of changes.)” Publication unidentified.
