Description:
Two men and one woman creating an architectural model of a planned beach city. The woman holds a hammer while the men add trees to the model landscape. The information panels seen behind them diagram and textually describe amusement areas, civic and cultural centers, and recreation. Interests considered in planning for recreation areas include: Natural site location, Accessibility to transportation from extended areas, Provisions for resort trade and local residents, Segregated facilities for all ages, Open spaces and rest areas in commercial amusement center, Accessibility to beach, Development of beach and Development of Yacht Harbor.

Photograph of an article page (2nd page of 3) with geological illustrations and text describing changes to the Colorado Desert area and the Gulf of Mexico, leading to the creation of the Salton Sink (Salton Trough). Text below illustrations at left: “Gulf of California once filled today’s Salton Sink area. We’ve made these charts to serve as a geological guide for visitors to the Salton Sea and the whole Colorado Desert area, We based them on the most widely accepted theory of the area’s evolution: Several hundred million years ago the Gulf of California extended north as far as San Gorgonio Pass. The Colorado River dumped into the gulf about where Yuma is today, gradually building a huge delta westward from its mouth.” [Text at right:] “In later prehistoric age, silt dam cut off gulf from Salton Sink area. As the silt piled up, it finally formed an earth dam which cut the Gulf of California in two and left an orphan salt water lake in the north. With no water to replace that lost by evaporation, the lake dried up-leaving an arid, 1,000-foot-deep basin which has been named the Salton Sink. (From Yuma to its mouth, the Colorado falls about 140 feet; the drop from Yuma to the Salton Sea is nearly 400 feet. Thus the next series of changes.)” Publication unidentified.
