Text of newspaper article reads, in part: Vandals Mutilate World War Relic. Nungesser Insignia Cut From Fuselage of Famous Plane. One of the priceless relics of the World war, a fighting plane flown by Captain Charles Nungesser, the French ace, has been mutilated by one of the grossest instances of vandalism to come to the attention of police ... Working with a sharp knife, the vandal cut from the side of the fuselage the famous Nungesser emblem ... Removal of the entire panel was not noted until a few days ago and makes the plane almost worthless. Handwritten on clipping: Santa Monica, California, 3/16/31

Description:
P. H. Philbin, of Chicago, a former owner of the Sorrento Beach Club building on the Pacific Coast Highway at the base of the palisades cliffs, had planned a 12-story apartment building on the site in 1953. The project included utilizing the massive concrete Sorrento Beach Club structure which had been abandoned in an unfinished state. The project was controversial, as some property owners felt that it would mar the beauty of the Santa Monica Palisades Park.

Ornate 1888 horse-shoe-shaped shell art wreath made by poet Ina Donna Coolbrith in upper left corner. In upper right corner is a portrait of Ina Donna Coolbrith from the frontispiece of her book Songs from the Golden Gate, 1895. The lower portion of the page is an article discussing In Coolbrith making the wreath ["Heirloom Shows Poetess' Art," Los Angeles Times, October 12, 1953]. At the time of this photograph the wreath belonged to the Perrys' nephew John H. Crum of Santa Monica. The shell wreath is an example of Victorian era domestic crafts.

Description:
Text reads, in part: Looking Back 25 Years. ... Three days after the races the names of the winning car drivers were announced in the Outlook, when the prize money was paid to them. Durant was first and received $4000; Hearne, second, won $2500; Le Cocq, third, $1500, and Pullen, fourth, $1000. Durant's average speed was 81.88 miles an hour for the 250 miles of the course. That was considered, the paper said, a splendid record for the new course.
