When Melvin climbed into the culvert to retrieve a lost tool his body dammed enough water to drown him. Firemen unsuccessfully attempted to revive him after his body was retrieved. A doctor ruled that he might have died of heart failure.
Masses of men, women and children watch as the culvert is raised and efforts are made to extract Melvin Hoffman.
