The heavily guarded 200-inch telescope mirror arrived on a custom built freight car from Corning, New York to Southern California where it will be housed at the California Institute of Technology.
People gather around the recently arrived freight train to see the 200-inch glass lens that traveled across the country. The lens is partially obscured by a billboard that says, "200" Telescope Disc made by Corning Glass Works, Corning, NY." "PYREX" is written across the curve on top of the lens.
This photograph is possibly related to the article, “Train Crew Nervous Carrying Giant Lens,” Los Angeles Times, 10 Apr. 1936: 1, 2.
