Five men lean against a rail at a horse race track. Fred Alger Jr., left, wears binoculars around his neck.

Mr. and Mrs. Fred Alger Jr. owned a race horse named Azucar that raced frequently in the 1930s, winning the Santa Anita Handicap race in 1935. Hugh Blue, on the far right, was the secretary of Santa Anita race track from its founding in 1934 to his death in 1965.
