Altar boys entering the St. Patrick Catholic Church with clasped hands to attend the mass for St. John Bosco. A young man in the front carries a crucifix on a staff, flanked by 2 young boys carrying candles in candlesticks.
John Bosco (Giovanni Melchiorre Bosco) was an Italian Roman Catholic priest, educator and writer of the 19th century, who put into practice the convictions of his religion, dedicating his life to the betterment and education of street children, juvenile delinquents, and other disadvantaged youth and employing teaching methods based on love rather than punishment, a method known as the Salesian Preventive System. A follower of the spirituality and philosophy of Saint Francis de Sales, Bosco dedicated his works to him when he founded the Salesians of Don Bosco.
This photograph is related to the article, "Mass Sung in Memory of St. John Bosco Here," with a photo caption reading: "Catholic Hierarchy Observing Saint's Anniversary: Solemn high mass in St. Patrick's Church yesterday with Bishop Cantwell presiding, commemorated canonization of St. John Bosco on the forty-seventh anniversary of his death...," Los Angeles Times, February 1, 1935.
